We were married on June 21, 1951, by Chaplain J. Floyd Dreith, at the Santa Margarita Ranch House Chapel, Camp Pendleton, California. The Best Man was Harold Adams, the Maid of Honor was Helen Wyke, and the organist was John Heying. Our wedding reception and dinner was at the old Carlsbad Hotel. Our first night was at the Laguna Beach Hotel followed by a week-end in Hollywood.
During our marriage, we have lived in Oceanside, California and Houston, Texas - 1952, Korea/Medford, Massachusetts - 1953; Cherry Point, North Carolina - 1954; Orange, California - 1955; Quantico, Virginia - 1958; Carlsbad, California - 1959; San Diego, California - 1963, Albuquerque, New Mexico -1964, Barstow, California - 1967; Carlsbad, California, 1969 to present.
Our first child, Stephen Michael Crabtree, was born at the Naval Hospital, Camp Pendleton, California, on March 31, 1952. Our son Paul Jeffrey was born on October 14, 1953 at the Lawrence Hanscomb Air Force Hospital, Waltham, Massachusetts, while Alma was living with her parents in Medford and I was in Korea.
We spent six months at Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, North Carolina, where I underwent training as an Air Transport Navigator. Subsequently, we were assigned to VMR-152, Marine Wing Service Group, Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, California.
In 1955, we bought our first house at 2345 Mills Drive, Orange, California. Our twins, Phillip Andrew and Phyllis Ann Crabtree were born at St. Joseph's Hospital in Orange, California, on April 25, 1957.
I was selected for Officer's Candidate School in January of 1958. I attended OCS at the Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Virginia, from March through June 7, 1958. After being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, I returned to Orange to bring Alma and the children to live at Quantico while I was in training at the Basic School.
After Basic School, we were assigned to Camp Pendleton. We sold our house in Orange and bought our home at 4070 Harbor Drive, Carlsbad, California, during March, 1959. We have lived here until the present except for the period from 1963 to 1969 when we were in San Diego, Albuquerque, and Barstow.
I served as the S3 (Operations Officer) with the 5th Marines in Vietnam. I returned from Viet Nam in December of 1969 and retired from the Marine Corps on May 31, 1970. Before retiring for good in June 1988, I worked four years as the Computer Systems and Program Manager at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation and twelve years as the Director of Data Processing at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, California.
Alma and I both earned our college education while serving in the Marine Corps and after we retired. Alma is an Artist and is active in several Art Leagues
